How many suits must a man have to be considered "well-dressed?" There is no hard and fast rule, but one thing is for certain, versatility in a wardrobe is essential to looking good and staying within a reasonable clothing budget. The following list of wardrobe "staples" should serve you well professionally and socially:

THE NAVY BLUE SUIT is the cornerstone of a man's wardrobe. While there are many options available, the most versatile suit would be a tropical weight worsted wool which can be worn year-round. Single-breasted jackets are considered standard.

A SPORTJACKET paired with a pair of worsted wool slacks, oxford shirt and a tie, creates a more casual, but professional-looking outfit. First choice goes once again to navy blue worsted wool because of its seasonless versatility. It can be worn over virtually anything: flannel or twill dress slacks, khakis or even well-worn jeans. Another popular sport jacket choice is a neutral tweed in either grey, blue, tan or olive. Tweeds are more suited to weekend wear or casual office days.

TOPCOATS AND RAINCOATS are two essentials of completing your business and social wardrobe. The best choice is a fine quality wool topcoat which should be somewhat dressy and classically cut so it can carry you through multiple occasions. Raincoats that feature liners that zip out for warmer weather offer most versatility.
